Indonesia

Phase II

MSMEs play a key role in promoting socioeconomic development in Indonesia. With over 30 million registered MSMEs in 2024, they represent approximately 99 per cent of all business units in the economy.

Despite their prominence and importance to Indonesia’s development, MSMEs still face a variety of challenges. Although there has been progress to support women and young women MSME entrepreneurs, there are still challenges related to gender disparity and women’s economic empowerment. To address these challenges, the APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership is working with local stakeholders in Indonesia to identify policy challenges and solutions. In particular, the project will address gender equality by improving the readiness of Indonesian men and women policy actors to implement gender-responsive and inclusive MSME policies and programming. Activities will include policy briefs and workshops on best practices for implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of gender-responsive and inclusive MSME policies.

Phase I of the APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership in Indonesia focused on capacity building by investing in human capital. Gender-inclusive programming worked to support women and girls in closing the gender gap in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

This phase began in 2016 and concluded in May 2021.
